How do I take off a counter shaft oil seal from behind the sprocket? ATV?
I have a 1990 500cc Suzuki Quadzilla, I have sprung an oil leak from behind the drive sprocket, I know that's a broken or thinned oil seal, I took the sprocket off and the spacer and the O ring, I can see the oil seal but I can't figure out how to get it out. Your not supposed to have to split the case can anyone help me out here?
A dental pick isn't going to be strong enough. There are bigger picks made especially for pulling the seal out, but since it's apparent you don't have one you might try this. Take a sheetrock screw, one of the thinner ones with the very sharp point. With a hammer, see if you can punch a little hole in the metal part of the seal and then screw the screw in a bit. Then depending upon how much room you have, use a small crowbar or claw hammer to pull the seal out prying on the screw. If the screw pulls out of the hole, try driving the tip of a slapp screwdriver into the hole. If that tears out, buy that time you should be able to grasp the seal with pliers and pry it out. Just be careful to not drive anything in so far as to scuff up the shaft or the housing behind the seal.
After you get it out, clean the hole out and find a socket, deep well most likely that will just barely fit inside the hole in the cover and not interfere with the end of the shaft. If there are sharp splines that the seal lip is going to have to slide over, try wrapping the splines with several layers of cellophane wrap. This is to keep the splines from cutting the new seal and ruining it. Grease the outside of the new seal, place the seal squarely over the hole and carefully use the socket to drive the new seal in.
