Gear Sprocket

can i use Shimano STI gearchangers with any gears?
basically i've bought a racer that i'm doing up and i want to know if i can add Shimano STI gear changers. Its quite an old bike currently with cross bar friction changers. Will i have to change the gear sprocket and brake system to work with STI changers?
Also if i change the gear sprocket is it likely i'll have to change the wheel too?
To the best of my knowledge the bike is a fairly old Schwinn Paramount.
ok so just in addition to the above, i have as i said i have a feeling its a Paramount, mainly this is from the fact that it looks the same (as far as i can tell) to a Paramount and because the wheels, brakes, brake levers and a few other things are branded with "Weinmann" and from what i can tell Schwinn bikes have these parts, is there a 100% method for working out what my bike is? i can add some pictures somewhere tommorow if it helps, i know its been badly sprayed at some point and i would guess a few parts have been changed.
Can the STI idea as it will be problematic at best. Keep it period correct, and mount some bar end shifters, known in the day as tip shifters. They move the shifting up to the handlebars and will work with you bike much better than STI's.
Get that frame media blasted (sodium or walnut shells) and have it powder coated very white. Do not paint over the chrome on the stays and fork. Trim the lugs with a line of black and black cable housings and you have the perfect Paramount.
Get the frame serial number and post it in a question. Some of the guys here KNOW the Schwinn serial number system and can tell you if it is a Schwinn.
