Wrecked my John Deere Saber 1742HS riding mower.?
The lip on the spindle on the drive shaft is bent and the engine doesn't want to turn over. I'm assuming the shaft is bent. The engine is a 17 HP Briggs Intek, Grainger sells replacement engines for $455. I will have to replace the spindle (pulley).
The mower is approximately 7 years old. Since everything else on the mower is OK and I have a snow blade, replacing the engine seems frugle.
Are the spindle (pulley) universal or do I need and exact duplicate?
To avoid any mistakes or mis-matched parts, get your supplies at a John Deere dealer. Fixing that mower would be a money saver over a replacement. The price of the pulley should be relatively inexpensive, say around $35 (that's a guess). Many John Deere dealers mark up their parts really bad, so if they won't cut you a deal on both the engine & pulley at the same time, then shop somewhere else. Haggling is back in now. No need to pay full price just b/c a dealer says you have to.
