Rear Crankshaft
trying to find out year of my 350 chev engine,its a 2 piece rear main seal and 4 bolt main.?
changing out crankshaft and oil pump,timing gear.do i have to know year of engine to source these parts.also doing bearings.thanks
It doesn't really matter what year this engine is to change the crank and bearings. They were the same though-out the run. Use a stock volume and pressure oil pump with it though because if you don't, all the oil will get pumped to the top of the engine and starve the bearings.Unless you drill out the oil return holes in the heads. The best thing to do is purchase a ring and bearing kit for your engine. It will come with all the parts you will need to re-build the bottom end, including gaskets. You will need to take the block to a reputable machine shop to have it tanked and to have the cylinders honed. If this engine has a lot of miles, you should have it bored too. The cost of over-sized pistons and rings are the same for standard parts. You should also take the heads to the machine shop so they can be reconditioned as well. Otherwise you're wasting your time and money. You didn't say what you plan on using this engine for but if you're looking for performance, its very easy to turn it into a 383 which will make incredible torque and substantial horse-power. the long and short of it is, there's quite a bit more to building an engine than just swapping out parts. A good cam/lifter set would be a good idea too. Don't forget the timing set either. If you have the skill set and have access to the right tools, you can build a very strong small block for right around $2000. Keep in mind, if it isn't done right, you're building a nice boat anchor.
