Solenoid Switch
Do I need a new starter or solenoid switch?
I was able to tap the starter & the car would start. It's not working anymore. How do I know if it's just the solenoid switch or if I need to get a new starter or both? The battery is fine, I have radio lights etc. so I know it's not the alternator. If I can get just buy a solenoid switch it'd be cheaper then the starter.
My bad I should have mentioned it's a 1994 Suzuki Sidekick with about 138,000 miles on it.
From your description, it sounds more like the starter. It is not a difficult job to do with simple wrenches:
1. disconnect the battery - ground wire first.
2. disconnect the electrical connections to the starter
3. undo the bolts (usually only two) holding the starter in place.
4. remove starter, take to shop for trade in and to make sure the new one will fit.
5. reverse above.
