Intrepid Brake caliper bolt stripped.. Is this safe?
Alright I have a 99 intrepid and I was doing brakes and the brake caliper bolt hole stripped out. And if you have ever owned a intrepid you would know that the whole steering spindle knuckle has to be replaced. So I could either use heli-coil for it as others have suggested and I have no experience in doing these. Or like I did is went to the hardware store and bought a locking nut that fits a 8x1.25 bolt. I cannot get my fingers or a wrench in the inner part of the caliper when I put it on so I glued the nut on the inside so id be able to get the bolt in it and was able to stick a flat head in and hold the Nut to tighten. The bolt does go far enough perfectly to hit the nylon in the lock nut and I would guess it is tightened to 60-80 pounds. Its real tight but do you think this is safe? Do you think the bolt could loosen in a locknut?
I wouldn't exactly call it safe but I don't think it is dangerous. The force is sideways on the bolt so as long as the bolt doesn't loosen up there shouldn't be a problem. If I were in that situation I would check it in a few days, then in a week or so after that if it is tight, then a month or two later. If it is hanging in there the annual brake pad checks should be good enough.
Helicoils are not hard to do, so if any of the inspections show any loosening I would go that way.
