Can my John Deere tractor mower be repaired and is it worth it?
I have a 314 JD tractor mower that is leaking oil from the governor and from the air filter area. I've been told that the governor needs replacing. The mower runs at a very high throttle speed, the engine gets very hot and tends to smoke after some time when using. Lately it also cuts out on me when trying to go at a faster speed; sometimes I have to pull up on the choke to prevent it from doing so but lasts only about 30 seconds.
So is it repairable, is it worth doing so or should I just bite the bullet and look for a new tractor mower?

Actually there are no 'lines between the lines' as I would rather not lose the 314 - sorry if it came across that way (lol). I really enjoy using it and the deck (a 48") makes short work of my 1.5 acres of yard; especially when the grass gets around 6" in height.

Jim, I've been told it's an Onan engine.
Your tractor is running a 14 horse power Kohler engine. They are a good little power mill, but they've got a nasty habit that just happens to be IDENTICAL to yours............
Your over-heating, governor leak and high rev problems are air-flow related. It doesn't matter how clean that engine looks. The most likely cause of EVERYTHING YOU MENTIONED is clogged cooling fins on the cylinder head. Your engine is running SOOOO hot that your carb is a victim of "vapor lock" (super-hot fuel that is forced into a "steam"). I find it hard to believe your valve seats haven't popped out yet!!
If you remove the engine's flywheel cover, you will see a thin sheet-metal shroud covering the cooling fins. Don't try to clean it out with a hose or screwdriver. REMOVE IT AND CLEAN THOSE FINS WITH A WIRE BRUSH. Re-install your shroud and engine cover. Replace the governor's cooked gasket.
Check your oil level and let your JD enjoy it's second wind.
Total cost to you will be under $10.00 for the gasket and gasket sealer.
