What units are used for this question?
I'm working on my physics homework and I have absolutely no idea how to answer the questions. We have learned nothing about this in class and I can't find it anywhere in the text book.
Here is one of the problems i am having trouble with:
"4. Use the following units to answer parts a-i.
Measurement units:
m (mass) kg
g (acceleration due to gravity) m/s^2
h (height) m
(a) If PE = mgh , what are the units of PE?"
Can someone please just point me in the right direction?
mass is in kilograms, kg
acceleration is in meters per second squared, m/s^2
height is in meters, m
If the answer has mass, acceleration and height, you simply replace the units for each portion.
mass * gravity * height = kg * m/s^2 * m
But, notice that there are meters * meters, so the answer is
( kg * m^2 ) / s^2
You could also say that since kg*m/s^2 is a Newton, the actual units would be Newton meters.
N*m which is the units of torque in S.I.
